How Much Product Should I Use In My Skincare Routine?

There is a great deal of focus on how to effectively layer our skincare, we receive so many of your skincare questions asking about very topic!

But if you’ve ever spent a frustrating 5 minutes actively trying to pat in excess moisturiser you know that the products we use need their time to shine.
To help avoid wasting product when you’ve dispensed too much, here’s our guide to the correct amount of product to use.

1. Cleansers

This may vary slightly depending on the format of your cleanser (i.e. a foam, gel or oil) and typically how much work you need it to do, for example, if you wear heavy makeup, you may need to use more product to effectively cleanse your face. As a general guide however, 1 pump or a grape sized amount of cleanser should be sufficient to give a nice, hydrating cleanse, and if you’re brave, why not give double cleansing a go?

2. Serums

Serums are usually a nice thin consistency that is rich in actives, which means a little goes a long way. A goji berry or blueberry amount of serum will be enough to cover your face in a nice even layer of serum goodness.

3. Eye Cream

When it comes to the delicate eye area, we need to be mindful that from little things come great results, which means you don’t need a lot of product for your eye contour. A pea size amount of product (split between each eye) is enough to effectively hydrate and revitalise your eye contour. A couple of notes to take away; be mindful to lightly “pat” the product around your eyes, no vigorous rubbing needed! Finally, if your eye cream is thicker than your moisturiser, apply it last and if it is a light gel consistency, apply before your moisturiser.

4. Moisturiser

Much like a cleanser, the required amount needed for your skin may vary. Start off with roughly the size of two blueberries in the palm of your hand, make sure to work over your face, neck and décolletage. If you have dry and or dehydrated skin you may need some more product to effectively achieve a fresh and hydrated complexion.

5. Spot Treatment

As the name would suggest, spot treatments are designed to take care of small surface areas, which usually means a very small amount goes along way. You want to apply half a pea size amount to a cotton tip and lightly dab the product onto your area of concern.

6. Exfoliant

Exfoliants are usually the favourite skincare item for most people, especially anyone who likes a course, scrubby feeling (note: save this for the bod, not the face!). When exfoliating in your skincare routine, an almond sized amount should be sufficient to lightly exfoliate the face and help to remove congestion. Always make sure when exfoliating to use gentle pressure only!

As always, we recommend to always patch test, particularly for higher efficacy products, just to make sure that your skin is not too sensitive.
