How to style and take care of curly hair

I must start off by saying, sadly for myself I don’t have beautiful curly hair (mine is fine and straight). So, in the interest of being able to provide you with a worthy read, I sat down with my sister Catia who’s been on a recent journey to nourish and revive her curls. Read below for her journey and her curl care.

1. Have you always liked your natural curls? Why/Why not?

It’s taken me a while to embrace my curls, I think because for a long time I wasn’t using the right products or ingredients for my curls, I felt like I had frizzy hair instead of curls. I’ve finally gotten to a place in my haircare journey where I have found the right products for me.

2. Have you found some favourite products that work well for your hair?

I’ve been using the Andalou Exotic Marula Oil Silky Smooth range for a while now, thanks to my big sister for introducing me to that one (😉). I think the Coconut Milk has really helped reduce the frizz, I’ve also noticed that my hair feels less dry. Win-Win!

3. What is your current routine?

When it’s hair washing day, I start by cleansing my hair with the Andalou Exotic Marula Oil Silky Smooth Shampoo. Then I follow with the Andalou Exotic Marula Oil Silky Smooth Conditioner. I let it soak into my hair as it helps moisturise my curls. I’ve learnt that while my hair is wet is the best time to brush it. This helps me avoid breakage and extra frizz. After my shower I use the Andalou Exotic Marula Oil Silky Smooth Taming Crème to add shine and define my curls.

4. What have you found to be a challenge with having curly hair?

For me the main challenge was finding the right routine and the right products that agreed with my hair type. Thankfully there are a lot of great role models nowadays who rock their curly hair, which has made embracing my natural hair really easy as well.

5. Any tips to share with us?

Like I mentioned earlier, something that made a big difference for me was brushing my hair when wet, instead of when it was dry. Also, when you jump out of the shower and need to dry your hair, try not to use a regular towel, opt for a microfibre towel instead. If you do need to fast track the drying process invest in a diffuser, this helps to ensure there’s not too much direct heat drying out your curls.
